Many people’s goal in life is to find their purpose.

You might think they’re searching for a fulfilling life. But that’s only a surface view of what’s really going on.

Deep down, our life purpose is driven by the need to mend our wounds.

Let me explain…

When we get wounded, two things happen.

First, we suppress our emotions to get through the trauma and give ourselves time to heal. And second, we try to prove that the wound doesn’t exist.

Because our wounds are so deeply rooted, our entire life purpose might revolve around this process. We might do everything in our power to control the things around us and avoid any further wounding.

This realization can be one of the most profound moments of your life.

Take Stephen Colbert as an example. You’d think that a top-rated comedian couldn’t have a wound-driven purpose.

You’d think wrong.

During an interview, someone asked him how he learned to be so funny.

Stephen Colbert explained that he comes from a big close-knit Catholic family. Tragic events took the lives of his brothers and father and left his mother depressed.

As a child, Colbert looked for ways to cheer her up. And since her depression was severe, he had to keep coming up with more ideas. As soon as one joke reached its expiration date, he’d have to come up with another.

So Colbert spent most of his childhood making up jokes to help his mother feel better. Soon enough, he got so good at it that he made a career out of it.

Becoming aware that your wounds gave you the skills to live your life purpose can be the biggest turning point in your life.

This shift allows you to move from “this happened TO me! (and it shouldn’t have)” victim stance to life…

To a “this happened FOR me (and I see how and why it was necessary) freedom stance that liberates your life.

And that’s when you can use those gifts in incredibly powerful ways (just like Colbert has).
