Learning to walk in the dark
When I moved to LA, I knew someone would invite me to live with them because my guidance told me they would. I had no idea how, but I trusted it. For six months, every time someone asked where I was moving to in LA, I’d say, “I don’t know yet, but someone’s going to invite me to live with them… so wherever that person lives.” I knew it sounded wild, but I also knew it was true. And it happened exactly that way.
A year later, I was on a bike ride along the Pacific Ocean and made a commitment with the Universe to go all-in on my big calling—with one condition: that I would have a partner by my side. I’ll never forget the sense that the Universe was chuckling at me, as if that condition was difficult for it to fulfill!
I knew I had some work to do to become the kind of person I’d need to be for the kind of partnership I desired. I spent two years doing just that—exploring, growing, and opening my heart—all while knowing in my bones that my partner was coming into my life.
In the spring of 2016, I was looking through my calendar for the fall and realized that it was wide open, with no travel or speaking booked. It immediately hit me — that space was open for the relationship that would enter my life that fall. Sure enough, Pete and I had our first date on November 1st, 2016 (and we’re getting married this coming September)!
Those are just a few examples of the many “magical experiences” I’ve had in life. They became so frequent that my friends coined the phrase “The ‘Of Course’ Life.” They’d hear some new story of magic in my life and say, “Of course that happened for you! That stuff always happens for you!”
I would remind them that it’s not personal to me. Truth is, listening and acting on faith is a practice anyone can cultivate.
Upon deeper reflection, what I’ve realized is that with each and every one of these magical experiences, I was living an affirmation. Whatever my deep knowing was, it became my mantra—my truth—my living affirmation… and eventually, my reality.
But what about when that kind of clarity isn’t on tap?
In every one of those experiences of supreme serendipity, I had a living affirmation that was related to a clear direction forward in my outer life.
So how do you navigate when you’re in a period of life that’s more directed toward your inner life? Could you have a living affirmation for that?
Lately, I’ve been in a season that feels a little unfamiliar to me…
I’m entering this year with a lot of clarity about the overall direction I’m meant to go in my business to fulfill my mission. I have some very cool projects unfolding that feel true and compelling—projects that I know are building the foundation for what’s meant to come next.
And while I have a good sense of where things are headed, I don’t have the singular, this-is-my-compass kind of knowing I’ve had at other times in my life.
So I asked myself:
What if I choose a living affirmation to follow in my inner world?
The first thing that came to me was: “I am learning to walk in the dark.”
That’s the title of a book I’m reading right now by Barabara Brown Taylor, and when I picked it up, I immediately knew that was an affirmation to live by. With so much upheaval and uncertainty in our world right now, I feel like many of us are learning this—perhaps more deeply than ever before.
Then, on a call with some friends, they added another affirmation that totally turns my crank: “I love it when the universe delights and surprises me.”
In Human Design, I’m a 2/4—a hermit/opportunist.
The hermit in me needs cave time, where new insights and opportunities are born. The opportunist then takes those insights and generates new paths forward—for myself and the people I serve.
Here’s why I’m sharing this with you today…
If you’re in a season of great clarity and expansion, there’s probably affirmation that’s already guiding you to what you’re building. Name it and affirm it!
If you’re in a season of uncertainty or in liminal space, perhaps it’s time to consciously enter the dark and find the living affirmation that will guide you there.
Whatever season you’re in, your living affirmation can be a profound compass that helps you align with the deeper truth that’s already unfolding for you.
Let it guide you. Let it shape you. Let it call the right things into your life.
If you follow it, I bet the universe will surprise you.
